Better Blinds Now Sells and Services the Window Treatment Needs of South Bethany, DE located in Sussex County, Delaware.
South Bethany, Delaware is an unincorporated community in Sussex County. The 2010 census shows that the town’s population is 449. This represents a 8.7% decrease over the decade prior. It is located in the Salisbury, Maryland – Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.
South Bethany, along with Bethany Beach to its north and Fenwick Island to its south, is often referred to as “The Quiet Resorts”. This contrasts with the bustling atmosphere at nearby Dewey Beach, and nearby Rehoboth Beach. South Bethany’s reputation for being a quiet place is helped by Delaware Seashore State Park, a six-mile-long barrier Island that acts as a buffer from Dewey Beach noise.
Also, there’s the relative peace provided by large unincorporated areas of condominiums and multimillion dollar beach homes located between Bethany Beach and the park. Fenwick Island State Park, and Fenwick Island itself, provide an insulation to South Bethany from the bustling Ocean City, Maryland.
South Bethany Beach is almost entirely residential, unlike neighboring Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach. It is known as “The Best Little Beach in Delaware.
South Bethany has a form of government called the town manager. The town also has an elected mayor and a six-member elected council. The town has a seven-officer department of police and a beach patrol. Although there is no evidence of Native American activity in South Bethany, it is possible that they visited the South Bethany area.
Penn vs. Baltimore was a long-running legal dispute that raged in 1683 over the question of whether South Bethany’s Delaware land belonged to Pennsylvania or Maryland. The dispute dragged on for a while, but William Penn gave the Delaware Colony its first legislature in 1701 and established it as a separate colony. The boundary dispute between the colonies did not end until 1759 when the parties to it agreed that the area now known as South Bethany was Delaware.
The earliest recorded European interest in South Bethany goes back to 1687. This was when Matthew Scarborough, an Englishman, had most of South Bethany’s area surveyed. A 500-acre (202 hectares), parcel in the north became “Scarborough’s Adventure.”
While a 500-acre (202 hectare) parcel in the south became “Middlesex.” In 1688, he “took up” the land, i.e. took possession of both parcels. South Bethany’s part was comprised of a 430-acre (174 hectare) section of South Petherton located at the head Little Assawoman Bay, approximately two miles (3.2km) south of Bethany Beach. Scarborough received a Maryland land patent for this area in 1695.
English settlers set up farms in South Bethany. William Evans, an Englishman, was granted a patent for land in 1741. The survey combined North and South Petherton to create a single parcel.
George McClellan, a Long Island, New York resident, purchased four tracts of land that were adjacent to each other in South Bethany. They covered a total of 140 acres (56.7 ha). McLellan transferred the land to Delaware Shore Land Corporation.
