Long Neck History

Better Blinds Shades now serves Long Neck DE window treatment needs

Native American tribes and early European settlers alike were drawn to Long Neck by its high elevation and close proximity to Atlantic Ocean. It also has beautiful bays filled with fish and shellfish. These bays are known as the Rehoboth or Indian River bays. The ocean access to Long Neck was a major draw for European settlers.

In 1677, Governor Edmund Andross gifted William Burton 1,000 acres of the “Long Neck”. William Burton and his 11 children continued to purchase the remainder of the peninsula’s land in order to create the area that is now Long Neck, DE. The Burton family has continued to live in Long Neck, and some members of their family still reside in the home built by Woolsey Burton many decades ago!

The Indian River Hundred

From the Lewes & Rehoboth Hundred, the Indian River Hundred was formed in 1706. The English term hundred is the division of a country. Although the exact definition of hundred is still being debated, it is believed that 100 was an area that could support 100 families and was capable of raising 100 soldiers or fitting 100 farms.

This term was first used in the United States by Maryland. It was used to identify voting districts and tax reporting areas until the 1960s. Delaware is the only remaining state to use this term today.

Long Neck Expansion

In the two centuries that followed, more families joined the Burtons of Long Neck. Long Neck established many community services on the peninsula in the early 1900s before other nearby towns. Ironically, the town did not have roads at that time.

You Are Not Isolated Any More

Long Neck was isolated from the rest Delaware until the middle 20th century. Long Neck was isolated from the rest of Delaware until the 1950s and 60s when the government constructed better roads, highways, and bridges. This greatly improved the town’s access to the outside world.

Massey’s Landing

Massey’s Landing is a beautiful scenic spot at the eastern tip Long Neck. It has been known throughout Delaware’s long history as one the most remote places in the state. Massey’s Landing was primarily a destination for duck hunters and fishermen before the 1950s and 60s. Long Neck’s improvements to roads and bridges made it more accessible. Massey’s Landing can be found on Long Neck’s northern coast. Massey’s Landing today is home to a public boat ramp, fishing pier, and other attractions.
