The town was believed to be named after Harbeson Hickman, a member of the Hickman family that had great influence and help shape the region for generations. The first Hickman resident was George Hickman. Born in the late 1700’s, George was reported to have bought a large chuck of land of which is now Harbeson, was instrumental in setting up a steamboat service between Philadelphia and Lewes, and also opened up a hardware store.
George married Mary Wolfe Marriner around 1817 and Harbeson Hickman was their second son. Harbeson moved to California for approximately 10 years, then returned and invested in real estate.
The Hickman family was also responsible for Fishers Paradise which they keep in the family for generations. Fisher’s Paradise, also known as Paradise Point , is a historic home located in Sussex County, Delaware.
The main house dates to about 1780 and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three bay, wood frame dwelling sheathed in cedar shingles. It has gable roof with dormers. The kitchen wing is the sole remaining portion of the original 1740s house that is incorporated in the present structure. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
